Some mock ups?
These are some mock ups that I’ve done so far:
This is the landing page:
This is the page that the only link “Explore Kilmainham Gaol” brings you to:
This is the page that “The Building” link brings you to:
These are the different shading effects that happen when you place the mouse over the different words:
Kind of lame, I know, but I’m doing my best.
Aesthetically, do these work?
Functionally, would these work?
Please don’t mock me. (wah wah)

Can you add a menu or button that allows you to get back to the home page? And maybe something that would allow you to get to other sections like “The Prisoners” when you are in the map view?
I don’t think it’s lame at all. I like the design. Only concern: in the size it is on your blog, the yellow text on the landing page is a little hard to read (for me). Maybe if the background photo was a little lighter (more like a watermark) or had more contrast. I like the map of the building and being able to explore from there. I agree that there should at least be a way to get back to the home page on every page.
I like these! I have color issues as well. Blind as a bat me can’t read the yellow on the faded out green on the right of the slides, and I can’t really see the color over the photo on the first slide. Also, the picture as background is Beautiful – why cover it up? I would recommend a more saturated hue for the text color. I don’t know what program you used, if it was PowerPoint, I feel your pain on the (lack of) color selection. The second issue is the highlights of the map – there are a few sections that don’t light up. Will you explain what those are? You may not necessarily have to include info, just let the user know if those are laundries or parking spaces or whatever.
Good stuff!
hal, really like what you’ve got here. i like that you are make the building plan interactive. will we get to see more photographs of the gaol when we click on the building areas? i know i’m getting ahead of myself but, i’m interested!
That looks really good. Nothing lame about it. I had the same reaction to the yellow text, though I’m not sure about how to fix that, as I’m still pretty inept with the web design. All I can suggest is follow up with other people in the class who know more. Also, I guarantee you there is some lab at Mason who can give you advice.
The other thing you might want to think about, if you haven’t already, is to make sure to put some directions about how to use the building plan. There have been a few sites we’ve looked at this semester with interesting interfaces but with too little explanation.
I hope that helps. Great job.
Ooops. I forgot that you have the “Click on a section of the jail” directions at the bottom. Still, you might want to make things a little clearer. I’m thinking it’s possible to miss links, so maybe you can separate the sections by color even before people start to click. Then, people will know the boundaries of each section. What about one of those site map pages, too? Just a thought.
Not adding much that hasnt already been said. I really like the color contrast. You have a good amount of empty space that it doesnt overwhelm the user. I think you have done a good job. I think the home page is clean and the user knows where they want to go.
